How Actor Direction Works

Client and Product Management3 min read

For a quick introduction to the actor direction field, see Adding Your First Product. This article covers the field in greater depth with more examples and guidance on what produces the best results.

What the Actor Direction Field Does

The actor direction field tells our creative team what kind of person should present your product in the video. It influences three things: which talent is cast, how they deliver the message, and the overall energy of the video.

This field is your direct line to the casting and production process. A well written direction leads to a presenter who feels like a natural fit for your product and audience. A vague or empty direction leaves those decisions entirely to the team, which may not align with your vision.

How to Write Effective Actor Direction

Strong actor direction covers four areas:

Demographics. Specify an age range and gender when relevant. "Woman in her late 20s" or "man in his 40s" gives the casting team a clear starting point. If demographics are not important to you, say so explicitly rather than leaving the field blank.

Energy and tone. Describe how the presenter should come across on camera. Words like enthusiastic, calm, authoritative, friendly, casual, or confident help the team guide the performance. Think about what energy resonates with your target customer.

Setting and context. If the environment matters, mention it. "At a desk with a clean background" sets a different scene than "outdoors in athletic wear." The team will work with your suggestion when selecting filming locations and setups.

Wardrobe and style. Include clothing suggestions if they matter for your brand. Business casual, streetwear, athletic gear, or "dressed like a young professional" all help the team style the talent appropriately.

You do not need to cover all four areas. Even two or three specific details produce noticeably better results than a blank field.

Examples of Effective Actor Direction

These examples show the level of detail that works well:

1. "Woman in her late 20s, natural makeup, casual outfit. Energetic and excited tone. Speaking directly to camera as if recommending the product to a close friend."

2. "Man aged 35 to 45, professional appearance. Calm, confident delivery. Sitting at a desk with a clean background."

3. "Young woman, early 20s, athletic build. Filming in workout clothes, post workout energy. Authentic and unscripted feel."

4. "Middle aged man, dad energy, relaxed tone. Standing in a kitchen or living room. Genuine enthusiasm, not over the top."

Each example gives the team enough to cast the right talent, set the right tone, and create a video that feels intentional rather than generic.

What Is Possible vs. What Is Not

RealityMold works with a pool of over 10,000 real actors spanning a wide range of demographics, styles, and backgrounds. Our creative team matches your direction to the best available talent for each video.

There are a few things to keep in mind:

  • You cannot browse, select, or request specific individual actors. The team handles casting based on your direction.
  • You cannot request celebrity lookalikes or copyrighted character portrayals.
  • Very narrow casting requirements (specific ethnicity combined with specific age, body type, wardrobe, and location) may limit the available talent pool. When possible, provide some flexibility in at least one dimension.

If you receive a video where the talent does not match your expectations, refine your actor direction and submit a new request. More specific direction almost always produces a closer match on the next attempt.

How the Creative Team Uses Your Input

Actor direction does not work in isolation. The team combines it with your product description, key advantages, and product image to build the complete creative brief for each video.

A strong description tells the team what to say. Strong actor direction tells them who should say it and how. When both fields are detailed, the resulting video feels cohesive and purposeful.
